I’ll never do that again.
After the busiest 3 months working 14 hours a day, when I looked back, I was still at the starting line.
I did over 300 tasks and moved almost nothing forward.
It hurt, and was frustrating.
😞 I failed. Yet I crushed that list every day.
I set myself a bunch of lofty goals.
At the end of each night, before bed, I’d take my little black book and write down my task list for the next day. This list was 3-5 items of the must-do stuff.
It was the perfect amount.
I could almost always get them done while handling all the normal calls, new emails, and general work stuff that pops up.
The list looks like this:
⏰ Too late, I realized I made not only one, but three mistakes.
I saw it.
I went through about 100 pages of to-do lists to look at what happened.
The majority of the items on my to-do list did not directly relate to a goal. And most of my goals barely had any items on the to-do list. Shockingly, one goal didn’t even have a single item on any of the to-do lists.
Three mistakes:
- Too many goals
- Tasks that didn’t advance a goal
- Goals that didn’t have any tasks
One realization:
- It’s better to accomplish a couple of goals, if not just one, rather than moving a lot of goals slightly forward.
This coin has three sides. My new rule for actually achieving goals:
No tasks without a goal. No goals without a task. No inactive goals.
I have 100 goals, and I don’t need to work on them all at once. Focusing on 1-3 goals and making sure there’s always a task moving them forward is the key to actually accomplishing those goals.
Stop doing the wrong tasks.
Stop having goals with no tasks.
Stop having too many goals at once.
Start crushing it – actually.
